Tadalafil is the active ingredient of the erectile dysfunction drug Cialis (Tadalafil). It belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5i).
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition where a man is unable to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. This condition is often caused by an abnormal hormonal function, such as a hormonal imbalance or vascular disorders. In some cases, ED can be caused by genetic factors. In the majority of cases, it has been suggested that the presence of genetic factors is responsible for the occurrence of ED. However, no specific genetic tests are available to evaluate the presence of ED.
PDE5 inhibitors are designed to treat erectile dysfunction by increasing the level of nitric oxide (NO) in the penis. NO activates an enzyme called guanylate cyclase, which is involved in the process of relaxing blood vessels. NO increases the levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which is responsible for the relaxation of the smooth muscles of the corpus cavernosum. This relaxation results in smooth muscle relaxation and increased blood flow to the penis. CGEP causes penile smooth muscle relaxation and increased blood flow to the penis, thus allowing men to achieve and maintain an erection when sexually stimulated.
A recent study published in the International Journal of Sexual Medicine highlighted that men with erectile dysfunction had a significantly higher risk of priapism. This is an extremely common condition, and its symptoms include impotence, erectile dysfunction, decreased sexual desire, and erectile dysfunction in some cases. The most common symptoms associated with ED are impotence, decreased sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, and a decrease in sexual performance. The most common cause of erectile dysfunction is a genetic disorder, which is characterized by a hormonal imbalance. It is characterized by a decreased amount of a specific type of enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), which regulates the function of the erectile tissue, such as the corpus cavernosum. The PDE5 inhibitor Tadalafil has been shown to be highly effective in treating erectile dysfunction and improving sexual performance.
The aim of the current study was to evaluate the prevalence of erectile dysfunction and its associated symptoms in a group of men with erectile dysfunction using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-EF).
The present study was a single-center cross-sectional study involving a total of 1040 men with erectile dysfunction using the IIEF-EF questionnaire. All men who were between 18 and 65 years old were included in the study. The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the National University of Porto Alegre (Reference No. 16–03/2020).
The study was conducted in accordance with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Ethical approval for the research was obtained from the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the National University of Porto Alegre.
A total of 1040 men with erectile dysfunction (ED) using the IIEF-EF questionnaire were enrolled. They were followed up for a median of 12 months. The mean age of the participants was 62.5 ± 7.2 years. The mean age of the participants with ED was 57 ± 6.1 years. The majority of the participants with ED were women (70.3%), with a mean age of 65 ± 7.8 years. The mean age of the participants with ED was significantly lower in women (61.1 ± 5.6 years) compared with men (62.8 ± 7.1 years), with a mean age of 66 ± 6.8 years, and a mean age of 71 ± 6.9 years.
The prevalence of the presence of ED was similar to the prevalence of ED in other populations. It was higher in men than in women, with a prevalence of 15.8% in men and 13.8% in women, with a prevalence of 15.7% in men and 16.2% in women, with a prevalence of 11.6% in men and 11.1% in women, respectively. The prevalence of ED in the general population was estimated at 1.8%, and the prevalence was higher in men (17.8%) than in women (16.3%).
The mean prevalence of the presence of ED was higher in women than men (9.4%) compared with the prevalence of ED in men (1.1%).
